The Voice of Forest Street Chorus

A student project

The students of Forest Street Elementary School recently completed a music composition/production unit entitled “The Voice of Forest.” In this unit, the students studied song form, lyric writing/analysis, melody writing/analysis and music production. The 5th grade classes of Ms. Grimsley and Ms. Wallace each completed a song that was performed at the annual Spring Concert in May 2007. The Select Choir (an auditioned group) also participated in the project. Their compositions were performed at both the Spring Concert and their 6th grade promotional exercises.
One highlight of this project was the lyric content component. Students decided what subject they wanted to write about and through proper guidance, were able to create impressive, meaningful lyrics and partnered them with appropriate rhyming structure. These students had a wonderful time learning about music technology and the production process. Each of the four classes recorded their songs and duplicated the CDs. Every student at Forest was given a copy along with a lyric sheet so they could sing along with the recording. I hope you enjoy “The Voice of Forest!

Believe You'll Achieve

I wake up in the morning and all I feel
Is a thought or a dream for something real
Got bullies on my back and problems on my mind
If I believe in myself then everything is fine
My strength is being tested by the things in my life
That try to bring me down but I’ve found that I’m right
When I believe in myself and have some faith
Then anything could happen I could win this race

BELIEVE YOU’LL ACHIEVE  (repeated)

I was walking to school these kids thought I was cool
They wanted me in their gang I said I couldn’t hang
When I walked away and then I turned around
The police pulled up and brought those kids to the ground
As the cops drove away those kids looked out at me
I made the right decision now I’m living gang free
Now this is a story you can appreciate
If you make the right choice your future will be great!

See What I Can Do

I heard some negativity coming through my ears;
The kids in my class said I would fail this year.
There’s violence on the streets trying to bring me down.
I had no one to talk to until I found
I got dreams. I got hopes. I got higher goals.
I’m the only one who knows ‘cause it’s in my soul.
So when I hear you say I’m gonna fail this year
Well, I got something you might wanna hear.

SEE WHAT I CAN DO (repeated)

I had some bad grades but I turned them around.
I felt like a fool till I stood my ground
‘Cause I am smart I am strong and I’ve got the will
And I’ve got big dreams that I’m gonna fulfill
Now see what I’ve done and how far I’ve come
And I hope that you could be the next one
So all you gotta do is remember the truth
I did it for me so now do it for you.

A little boy once filled with joy is standing all alone
You see his dad walked out and now his house just doesn’t feel like home
And as his tears fall in an empty hall there’s no one to heal the pain
Still he carries on ‘cause his heart is strong though he hangs his head in shame

Pick up your head little boy
Don’t you know you’ve got to believe!
It’s gonna get better little boy
Just wait and you’ll see!
Nothing lasts forever
And pain fades away.
Someday,
It’s gonna get better.

A little girl with her hair in curls is growing up so fast
See she used to smile but it’s been a while since her brother passed
The wrong place and time defines the way his story goes
But she carries on ‘cause her heart is strong although you’d never know

Pick up your head little girl
Don’t you know you’ve got to believe!
It’s gonna get better little girl
Just wait and you’ll see!
Nothing lasts forever
And pain fades away.
Someday,
It’s gonna get better.

It’s gonna get better, this is what I say
When the day is long and doesn’t go my way
It’s gonna get better, this is how I feel
When I can’t go on but I’m forced to deal
It’s gonna get better, is what I say to you
When you just don’t know what you’re supposed to do
All I know is time has shown
That everyone can change

Pick up your head little boy
Don’t you know you’ve got to believe!
It’s gonna get better little girl
Just wait and you’ll see!
Nothing lasts forever
And pain fades away.
Someday,
It’s gonna get better.
